If you are familiar with knitting socks, this will be a piece of cake. If not, I highly recommend experimenting with Knitty's Universal Toe-Up Sock Formula. It explains everything you'll need to know about this pattern.
Feel free to modify this pattern, but do not distribute it without my name attached, please!
Gauge - Approximate, as these socks are quite stretchy and will probably be too big for a newborn anyway.
- 7.5 stitches per 1 inch stockinette stitch
Materials
- Knit Picks Shine Sport in colorways Willow (MC) and Leapfrog (CC) - less than one skein each (in fact, you could most likely get at least three pairs from that quantity)
- one set of 5 US2/2.75mm double-pointed needles
- crochet hook in similar diameter of needles (if using a crochet cast-on)
- stitch marker
- tapestry needle

Instructions
CO 16 sts using your favorite provisional cast-on using waste yarn or MC.
Begin toe in CC:
R1: P to end.
R2: K15, W&T.
R3: P14, W&T.
R4: K13, W&T.
R5: P12, W&T.
R6: K11, W&T.
R7: P10, W&T.
R8: K9, W&T.
R9: P8, W&T.
From this point forward, you will pick up any wraps and knit or purl the stitches and wraps together. You will be double-wrapping most of these stitches. (Again, refer to the sock pattern posted above for clarity, if needed.)
R10: K to first wrapped stitch, knit stitch and wrap(s) together, W&T.
R11: Sl1, p to first wrapped stitch, purl stitch and wrap(s) together, W&T.
Continue as above, making sure to slip the first (wrapped) stitch of each row to the working needle, until you have worked all wrapped stitches but the one at the end of the purl row.
Here, instead of turning the work, remove waste yarn from the opposite side of your last worked row and pick up each stitch, dividing all stitches evenly between four DPNs. Place marker.
Begin working in the round, picking up the last wrapped stitch as you knit.
Knit 1.5 rows for the first sock and 2 rows for the second so the color-change seams are on opposite sides.
Begin working 3x1 rib:
3 rounds MC.
2 rounds CC.
2 rounds MC.
2 rounds CC.
6 rounds MC.
Change to CC and work heel exactly as toe, omitting "R1".
Work in 3x1 rib for 20 rows.
BO using double-wrapped bind-off: on your last working row, double-wrap each stitch, continuing with pattern. On next row, pick up each stitch as if to bind off WITHOUT working each stitch. (A tutorial video can be found here.)
Use tapestry needle to weave in ends. Voila! Some lovely baby socks! :)
